Who I Work With
Adults
Children & teenagers
My name is Sarah and I’m a qualified counsellor with a BSc (Hons) Counselling, as a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) this means I adhere to their ethical framework. I hold an enhanced DBS and I am fully insured to practice and I am registered with the ICO.
I have experience working with children, teenagers and adults through working in schools and as a volunteer counsellor working with young adult's charity Young Concern Trust (YCT) as well as Place2be. I have supported young clients and adults to work through issues such as depression, anxiety, overwhelming thoughts and emotions, anger, panic attacks, attachment issues, self harm, suicidal ideation and traumatic experiences.
I have completed safeguarding courses and my certificates are up to date, and updated yearly. I attend regular continuing professional development (CPD) workshops throughout the year so I can be better informed of presenting issues that can affect people and learning new techniques and interventions so I can support you as an individual.

My Approach
Everyone deserves time to look after their mental health, so if you are struggling, I invite you to reach out.
I have supported clients to work through issues such as:
Anxiety
Depression
Overwhelming thoughts and emotions
Anger
Panic attacks
Attachment issues
Suicidal ideation
Childhood trauma
Bereavement
I support people to explore suspected and diagnosed neurodiversity. I have experience working with children, teenagers and adults.
I am an integrative counsellor which means that I incorporate a range of models and approaches into my work with clients, depending on their current needs.
I will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you and work with whatever you bring to sessions. We will review our work together regularly, which allows us to collaborate and find out what you feel is working or not working and what you would like to focus on.
I provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space away from the demands of everyday life, where we can explore your difficulties and find ways to move forward towards improved mental health.
I can support you in making sense of how you are feeling, and to explore how you can move forward from the place you are at now in your life. Our sessions would involve building a trusting relationship, and through this you would develop more of an understanding of yourself and what you hope to change going forward.
I provide both short and long-term work on a weekly basis, with progress reviews at regular intervals.

Getting Started
I provide an initial telephone call free of charge, for you to ask any questions about the way that I work. I find that this allows you the opportunity to decide if you are comfortable to work with me as your counsellor.
I believe that the relationship between you and your counsellor is key to facilitating the changes that you wish to make. I offer a safe and supportive relationship to enable you to work towards achieving your goals.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange a free initial call.
This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right person to help.
Many therapists tend to view counselling as ‘short-term’ work; when someone has a problem that can be looked at and discussed in a clearly-resolvable way. This work often requires undertaking sessions for a certain number of weeks, to explore, discover and clarify a way forward. Therapy is a word used more to describe ‘long-term’ work; discussion that tends towards substantial issues and things that might be life-changing on a deeper level.
Whether counselling or therapy work best as a short- or long-term option depends on the client though, and the difficulties they are facing. In some cases counselling can prove helpful as a continuing, longer-term option, or therapy can help resolve an issue in just a few sessions.
How long a period of therapy lasts will vary from person to person and depend on the depth of the issues they are facing. For some people a couple of sessions helps to bring their problems into focus, and they feel ready to move forward; other problems may require more of an open-ended approach. Before we begin any work we will agree on the number of sessions we’ll undertake, and at the end of that number review our progress. As long as we both agree further therapy will be of benefit to you, sessions can continue.
My aim is to offer a first appointment - known as an initial assessment - within 1-2 weeks. Then we would arrange a set number of therapy sessions to take place at the same time every week, that is convenient for you and where I have availabity. How quickly these sessions can begin will depend on the availabity of that free ‘slot’.
Everything that is said within the therapy room is private - this is one of the main ways therapy differs from talking to a friend or relative. Once you are comfortable with the format of weekly sessions and the safe space they provide, you will find the freedom to speak in confidence is of great value. Note that there are some situations where you may be a risk to yourself or others, and there the law requires that I notify an authority; in these cases I may not be able to keep total confidentiality. Breaking confidentiality is very rare though, and only happens after the person concerned has been informed.
